Trends 2025

fashion your style Jan 22, 2025

It's not about what's in, what's out or what was. It's about doing YOU and owning it.

Ever wondered what's in and what's out for 2025? Do you even care? I bet you already have some of these trends in your wardrobe and you can have fun playing in your closet.

I'm not a huge fan of wearing trends. However if it sticks around for a while I'm likely to play dress-up in it. My style philosophy is rooted in the longevity of classics, but too many can be boring.I always like my outfits to have a modern twist so that I stay looking current and relevant. Trends after all, can add a touch of freshness - if you use them sparingly.

In the past, trends would last anywhere from three to five years. Now, with the rapid-fire pace of social media, their lifecycle has sped up dramatically. Wearable trends tend to stick around longer, but once they are deemed *out* they can feel especially passe, particularly for women over 50 who may prioritize polished, ageless style over fleeting fads.

This year I thought it would be fun to look at fashion trends that are phasing out for 2025 and the ones making their debut. Before diving in, let me emphasize: take these insights with a grain of salt. The post is meant to inform, not prescribe. I firmly believe personal style should represent who you are, not be a carbon copy of *what's in*.

A truly stylish and versatile wardrobe strikes a balance between investing in timeless classics and sprinkling in a few seasonal trends. Think of trends as the spice in your outfit - they enhance the flavour but should never overpower the main dish.

Trends on Their Way Out and Those Coming In 2025

  • Fit: While oversized blazers and chunky sweaters dominated recent years, the pendulum is swinging back toward more tailored silhouettes. Pencil skirts are gaining in popularity. Structured pieces that define the waist and provide shape are taking center stage. Quiet luxury will be less prevalent, but still here. Athleisure wear will continue to dominate and you'll find them in luxury fabrics such as cashmere and silk. Matched sets will be back to elevate the look.
  • Denim: Skinny Jeans, Jeggings and long denim skirts have been kicking around the *what's out * list for a couple of years already. I believe this year we'll see less of them. The Barrel jean trend will continue for 2025, as will wide-legged, classic straight and flare denim. Women have also figured out that these styles are much more comfortable than body hugging hip to ankle styles. We'll be seeing grey denim more this year.
  • Footwear: Mesh flats have seen their *best-before-date*. Loafers are still going strong however the heavy slug sole is going away. That chunky loafer will be back to classic. Retro sneakers, classic leather and fabric flats rule. Kitten heels and slingbacks are the elegant way kick it up a notch in 2025. Cherry Red will be popular for bags and shoes.
  • Fabrics & Accessories: Leather in new hues, beyond the traditional black and brown. Expect to see it in deep greens, burgundy, navy and even muted pastels, adding depth to your wardrobe. Popular animal prints are Lynx, Cow, Zebra and Snake. Polka dots, stripes and other subtle patterns will continue to dominate. Accessories are where the fun happen. They are an easy way to modernize a classic outfit without committing to a full trend. This year big, bold accessories - from statement necklaces to oversized earrings are having a moment. Charms are on everything, bracelets, necklaces and bags. Pearls are more popular than ever this year.

Trends are fleeting, but style is forever. Use the trends of 2025 to inspire and refresh your wardrobe, but let your style - the one that makes you feel confident, comfortable and naturally polished be your GPS.
